Where Southern Breezes Drift: Lingnan Penjing in Bloom at Victoria Park in Hong Kong
By KASH Art Center · June 9, 2026
This spring, Victoria Park became a spirit as Where Southern Breezes Drift unfurled across its grounds, from March 14 to 23, 2025. Organized by the KASH Art Center during the Hong Kong Flower Show, this curated experience brought 18 exquisites penjing to life, each one a miniature symphony of nature sculpted with poetic restraint.
Lingnan, subtropical region of southeastern China, has long been the cradle of this expressive art form. Each penjing stood as a tribute to generations of craftsmen—rooted in tradition, shaped by weather, and refined by human vision.
But this was more than an exhibition. KASH Art Center introduced a conceptual artwork that took root in the theme of succession (傳承) —a silent dialogue between generations. Through a living arrangement of Buxus hainanensis, the piece invited quiet reflection on the fragile continuum of cultural memory and the hands that carry it forward.
Mr. Kam Chi Wai was invited as an official penjing docent for visitors during the penjing exhibition, he demonstrated warm narratives and deep knowledge revealed the heart of each penjing. Alongside him, KASH’s penjing instructors offered at least six hours of daily engagement—sharing techniques, insights, and a reverence for the art that drew hundreds into their orbit.
Adding texture to the experience were contributions from eight esteemed local penjing artists, their donated works gracing the display with individual flair. Behind the scenes, mentor Mr. Tong Yuk Chiu wove it all together—his vision anchoring the show’s grace and cohesion.
Crowds lingered. Conversations bloomed. Many expressed more than admiration—they felt awakened, moved by the quiet eloquence of miniature penjing that spoke of nature’s strength and human legacy.
To the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, HKSAR, the KASH Art Center offers sincere thanks for their support in providing a stage for this encounter between heritage and heart. The breezes that drifted through Victoria Park carried more than spring’s warmth—they carried a promise, blooming one penjing at a time.
